Orange staining and metallic taste often point toward iron, but the right treatment depends on more than an “iron present” result. Iron can appear in different forms and may occur with manganese, hardness, low pH, sulfur odor, bacteria, or sediment.

Build a useful test panel

  • Total and dissolved iron when available

  • pH and alkalinity
  • Hardness
  • Turbidity or sediment information
  • Sulfur-related testing when odor is present
  • Bacteria testing for a private well
  • Well flow and household peak-flow requirements

Why chemistry changes the design

Some dissolved iron can be treated by ion exchange under suitable conditions. Higher concentrations or oxidized iron may need oxidation and filtration. Low pH can interfere with treatment and damage plumbing. Manganese and sulfur can require different media or contact time.

This is why a generic cartridge or softener recommendation based only on staining can fail prematurely or create excessive maintenance.

A dedicated residential iron or sulfur system often falls in the low thousands installed, while a multi-equipment train can cost substantially more. Request separate prices for pretreatment, main equipment, plumbing, disposal, startup, and ongoing service.
