The best treatment plan starts with evidence. Taste, smell, staining, and scale can help describe a problem, but they do not reliably identify every contaminant or the right equipment. Use your water source and a certified test result to define the treatment goal first.
Start with the water source
For a public water system, begin with the utility’s Consumer Confidence Report. The EPA explains that public-water customers should receive a report with state-certified results and regulatory comparisons. A household test can still be useful when the concern may come from service lines or building plumbing.
For a private well, the owner is responsible for routine testing and maintenance. The EPA recommends annual testing for total coliform bacteria, nitrates, total dissolved solids, and pH, with additional tests based on local risks and changes in taste, odor, color, or nearby land use.
- Public water: obtain the current utility report, then test at the tap when plumbing-specific contamination is possible.
- Private well: use a state-certified laboratory and ask the local health department which contaminants are common nearby.
- After flooding, construction, a change in water appearance, or a positive bacteria result, treat the issue as urgent and consult qualified local professionals.
Use the right kind of test
A quick strip or in-home sales demonstration can be useful for screening hardness, chlorine, or pH, but it is not a substitute for a certified laboratory result when health-related contaminants are the concern.
Ask the laboratory for units, detection limits, sampling instructions, and whether the result is accredited for the analyte being measured. Keep a copy of the report so every equipment proposal can be compared against the same facts.

Turn the result into a written treatment objective
A good objective is specific: “reduce lead at the kitchen drinking tap using a certified point-of-use unit” is stronger than “make the water pure.” It defines the contaminant, location, performance claim, and scope.
Request proposals that identify the exact equipment model, certified reduction claim, flow rate, expected pressure loss, replacement schedule, annual operating cost, warranty, and what happens if follow-up testing misses the target.
