Public water systems
Public utilities treat and monitor water under drinking-water requirements and provide a Consumer Confidence Report. That report is the starting point for source and distribution-system information.
A household can still have a plumbing-specific issue. Lead, for example, may enter after the water leaves the treatment plant through service lines or building plumbing. Sampling location and method matter.
Private wells

Well-water design often requires a broader chemistry panel because pH, hardness, iron, manganese, sediment, sulfur, bacteria, nitrate, and local contaminants can affect both safety and equipment performance.

When to call more than a filter installer
- Recent well flooding, damaged well cap, suspected septic impact, or positive bacteria results
- Sudden color, odor, pressure, or sediment changes
- Arsenic, nitrate, PFAS, solvents, fuel-related compounds, or another health-based exceedance
- A treatment proposal that does not address the source or recommend confirmation testing
